Katahdin Iron Works is a state-maintained historic site with a restored blast furnace and a beehive-shaped charcoal kiln originally built in 1843. Nearly 2,000 tons of iron were produced here each year in the late nineteenth century, and the community even boasted a resort hotel.

Open from May to October, the seventeen-acre park has picnic facilities.

From Milo, Katahdin Iron Works is located thirteen miles east of Dover-Foxcroft, Route 11 heads north toward Millinocket, in Penobscot County. Halfway between Milo and Millinocket, a left-hand turn (five miles north of Brownville Junction) leads down an unpaved road to Katahdin Iron Works.
