DEXTER - The Dexter Historical Society's Grist Mill Museum and Carr Schoolhouse are now open for the season, Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 4:00 and Saturday 1:00 to 4:00. Two new building blocks by Fernwood of Maine featuring the Pleasant Street School and the Spring Street School are featured for sale in the gift shop area. One special early visitor this season was a woman who is the great-granddaughter of David L. Stain. Stain was convicted of murdering John W. Barron and robbing the Dexter Savings Bank in 1878. After spending thirteen years in jail, Stain received a full pardon when new evidence proved his innocence. Curator Richard Whitney and intern Maria Mountain have made additions to the agricultural and automotive exhibits using newly acquired display cases. They have also installed a new exhibit featuring the Amos Abbott Woolen Mill. It includes information on the status of the renovation work and the fund drive for the new Abbott Museum, formerly the Abbott Office building. A volunteer crew recently removed some lower clapboards at the Abbott Museum to prepare for foundation work later in the summer. The society is planning an Open House at the Abbott Museum on July 16 to demonstrate our progress to date and explain future work plans. |
