Over 10,000 hunters get a chance at a bonus deer
Monday, October 28, 2002
AUGUSTA, Maine -- The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife issues Any Deer permits to manage the deer population in the 30 wildlife management districts that comprise the state of Maine. Hunters apply for these any deer permits through a lottery. In WMDs 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 and 30, there were more permits available than hunters applying. In those districts, a bonus permit lottery was held to distribute these unallocated any deer permits.

There were 10,004 bonus antlerless permits issued in those six different wildlife management districts.

This bonus antlerless permit is for antlerless deer only; it is valid only in the wildlife management district for which it was issued; it can be used at any time during the expanded archery season, regular archery season, firearm season or the muzzleloading season; it is in addition to the Any Deer permit that was issued; can be transferred to a junior hunter or a senior hunter 65 or over; and can be used in any order with other deer permits. Please note, if you kill a doe and wish to hunt for a buck later, tag the doe with your bonus antlerless permit and save your license or Any Deer tag for later.

Any Deer permit holders still have a few days in which to transfer their permit to a junior hunter or a hunter over 65. All paperwork for this transaction must be completed prior to the start of the firearms season, so don't delay if you want to give your permit to a junior hunter or one over the age of 65.
