Mayo receives $100,000 Bequest
Thursday, January 22, 2004
DOVER-FOXCROFT - Mayo Regional Hospital received $100,000 this month from the estate of the late Anne M. Urban of Monson as a gift to the hospital's endowment fund. The annual income and up to half of the capital growth is to be used at the discretion of the HAD 4 Board of Directors, with the donation to be held as the John and Anne Urban Fund.

Anne M. Urban died on April 10, 2003, and was predeceased by her husband, John. The couple had lived most of their life in New Jersey, where Anne was involved in banking and John was a 40-year employee of DuPont. They had vacationed in Piscataquis County for many years, and retired to Monson approximately 15 years ago.

The Urbans were not survived by any immediate family members, so they decided to donate a portion of their estate to Mayo Regional. According to a personal representative of the couple, Mrs. Urban was impressed with the care she had received at the hospital and felt Mayo would be a worthy beneficiary.

"Mayo is honored that Mr. and Mrs. Urban chose to remember the hospital in their will," said Tom Lizotte, Director of Marketing and Development. "Donations from both planned giving and annual fundraising appeals are increasingly important for non-profit, community hospitals."

Mayo Regional has a modest endowment, which produces investment income that helps the hospital meet operating and capital expenses.

The Urban gift continues a tradition of philanthropy to Mayo that was begun in 1935 by Col. Edward J. Mayo, the Dover-Foxcroft benefactor for whom the hospital is named.
