Dexter Historical Society celebrates 35th Anniversary
Wednesday, July 31, 2002
DEXTER - The Dexter Historical Society is planning a big open house on August 9th with longer hours, 9 AM to 7 PM while celebrating their 35th Anniversary.

Curator Rick Whitney and all the volunteer staff will be on hand showing visitors all the newly acquired local artifacts and memorabilia that portrays the wonderful history of Dexter. The DHS now has 4 buildings in its collection; The Grist Mill Museum, the Miller House, the Carr School House and the newly acquired Abbott Mill (red building) location. Each location has its own unique history and displays.

During the 35th Anniversary celebration, there will be a 6 PM ribbon cutting for the New Bridge crossing the Mill Stream behind the Grist Mill. This is a project designed and executed by Eagle Scout Kyle Wilson. The Dexter region has shown an abundance of community spirit by donating supplies and offering free labor to help Kyle Wilson, 17, of Dexter, construct a 64-foot covered pedestrian bridge linking the Dexter Historical Society Museum to Wayside Park. Town Manager Bob Simpson, and others, will be the featured speaker during the ribbon cutting at 6 pm.

Cake and refreshments will be served during the open house as well as the unveiling and sale of the 2003 Dexter Historical Society Historical Calendar ($7.50), the new Frame Blocks of Dumbarton Mill and Amos-Abbott Mill ($18.95 each or $35.00 pair). Other DHS memorabilia will also be available for purchase on the sale table. Old Dexter School pictures will be available for viewing at the Carr School House.

Curator Whitney would also like to announce that there will be a "special surprise" on Friday, August 9th for the 1st 60 people visiting the Grist Mill Museum.
