The play is being produced by Barbara Vincent of the Depot in Greenville Jct. Lost In Yonkers is a memory play set in an upstairs apartment in Yonkers, New York. You'll find laughter of the heart in this Neil Simon,1991 Pulitzer Prize winning play. The honesty of the writing and characters run deep. Simon (who lost a wife to cancer leaving him with two daughters) tells the story of Eddie and his two young sons during the war in 1942 Yonkers. Eddie's wife has recently died of cancer, and the loan shark who funded her care is demanding payment. Where can his two sons stay while he works off the loan? Eddie's choice is with his mother who lives with her adult yet mentally immature daughter, Bella, Simon said, "My mother used to tie me into my high chair so I wouldn't fall out." Many years later that feeling of constriction and control led the playwright to write a play in which a mother controls her daughter so that she won't "fall out" into a world where she can be hurt by her emotional vulnerability." Much humor is found in the 12 and 15 year old boys' candid perceptions and dealings with Grandma, Aunt Bella, Uncle Louie the gangster, and Aunt Gert who forgets to stop talking when she breathes. They are an odd lot, but our fascination, empathy, and laughter with them rises from a story of still vulnerable survivors whose first and harshest challenges came from their upbringing. While the boys are temporarily lost in Yonkers, the rest of their sad yet funny family is truly lost. Prior to Greenville, this production has been staged in Brooks, Winterport, and Bangor.
