Free course teaches participants how to be money smart

Penquis Community Action Program will be offering a free five-week financial education course. Classes will be held Tuesdays, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., November 5 through December 3 at Fleet Bank, 88 Main Street, Newport.

The classes use the FDIC Money Smart curriculum and cover a variety of topics, such as banking, opening a checking account, budgeting, saving, credit, credit card use, loans and purchasing a home. Participants will also learn about the Family Development Account program, which enables income-eligible individuals to enroll in a matched savings program for home purchase, education or small business development. Savings are matched 2:1 for a maximum individual contribution of $2,000 and maximum match of $4,000.
